As of 2012, de Windt continued as professor of Molecular Cardiovascular Biology at the research Institute CARIM at UMC Maastricht. Colleague de Windt acts in many advisory committees where he has a strategic role in distributing research funds. He is member of the editorial board or even acts as associate editor of a number of cardiovascular pharmacological research journals and is ad hoc reviewer for Cell, Nature, Circulation and many other top journals. Leon has acquired a number of impressive research grants (amongst others a VENI and VIDI grant) and recently acquired with his colleague Prof. Pinto a subsidy of 5 M€ of the CVON with subject molecular biological research to new diagnostic and therapeutic targets for heart failure. In one of his most recent publication published in Nature Cell Biology, he describes a new and promising class of chemically modified RNA-pharmaceuticals for relevant medical conditions. He is a wanted invited speaker. He has nearly 80 original publications to his name, as well as a number of book chapters.
