Martina Calore was born in Venice (Italy) in 1982. She attended the academic studies in Industrial Biotechnologies at the University of Padua (Italy), where she performed an internship in the lab of Prof. Alessandra Rampazzo to study the molecular genetics of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopthy (ARVC). In 2009, she started working as PhD student in Cardiovascular Sciences focusing on the identification of CTNNA3 as a novel ARVC gene by performing in vitro functional studies. In this context, she spent a period in Prof. Frans van Roy’s group in the University of Ghent (Belgium) to analyze protein-protein interactions. After her PhD, she acquired skills in next generation sequencing (NGS) techniques and she collaborated with BMR genomics (Padua, Italy) in a diagnostic project aimed to develop a technical and analytical strategy to analyse by NGS a panel of genes involved in different cardiomyopathies. Afterwards, she developed a custom panel specific for ARVC to identify novel causative genes. From August 2015, thanks to a Marie Sklodowska-Curie fellowship, she is working as a postdoc in the department of Cardiology of Maastricht University under the supervision of Prof. Leon de Windt in order to investigate the role of microRNA in the pathogenesis of ARVC.
